    I Am Listening

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone, where you are listening closely and the very next thing they say is totally unexpected?  This has happened to me so many times, especially in my experience with teaching and with parenting. Have there been moments when you ask a question, with an already framed idea of what the answer could be or should be, and then you hear something that takes you off guard. You know that show " Kids say the Darndest Things"? I can attest to that!

Listening and hearing involves being open. It involves a choice. It involves response. I am learning that hearing God takes practise and intention.

Sometimes people speak and their voice seems to come out of nowhere. At times we hear things we don't even want to hear. Sometimes we can be listening and yet because we connect words or phrases to certain experiences, we hear something totally different than what is being said and could possibly miss out on a wonderful message.

I remember the time my husband was proposing to me—was in a moment in time and place that I least expected, so when he started the conversation, I nearly stopped him because I thought he was breaking up with me. I was listening to every word he said but perception is everything! I am so glad I let him finish!

As I think about listening, I reflect on listening to and hearing God correctly. I have had experiences with God when I have asked questions and I am surprised by His answer. I didn't see the response that I received, coming. I have had encounters with Him where I have been listening and what He shares I have misunderstood and could have missed His blessing. I have also heard His voice in the most unexpected places and times and have had to make the choice if I am going to stop, listen and respond with obedience. Listening and hearing involves being open. It involves a choice. It involves response. I am learning that hearing God takes practise and intention. We may hear what we want to hear. We may not. What is most important is knowing His voice, whenever and wherever He speaks. God also can say the darndest things! He has surprised me many times. I am still learning to listen well. I am getting better. I know I want to hear Him no matter what. I am truly blessed when I let Him finish at any place and in any moment. I pray you will be too. I wonder what God has to say to us today.

    Speak Lord...your servant is listening.
