I love God but…

God is the centre of my life but…

Have you ever heard someone trying to explain away their sin or disobedience? Have you been trying to explain away why you must keep doing something, or why you aren’t doing something? 

I was listening to a radio interview and it just saddened me to hear someone make excuses for their choices and continue to say how much they loved God… But…

The scripture is straight forward. It leaves no room for us to wonder if and how we truly love God. It is not easy, but it is simple. “If you love me, keep my commandments… He that has my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:15,21

There is no true love for God with a “but”. We either love God most or love other things more.  Our obedience shows that. 

Where are areas you and I can have trouble loving God?

I love you God, but I won’t forgive that person.
I love you God, but I will have sex outside of marriage or commit adultery
I love you God but sexual deviance or impurity is just part of who I am
I love you God but I can’t help talking about that person
I love you God but I make the money and I will spend it how I want
I love you God but I love food more than my health
I love you God but don’t ask me to let go of…
I love you God but…

We all have areas that we have to examine. May we choose obedience rather than sacrifice, because that is where love grows and blessings come. We can’t love God with buts in the way. God can’t love us as He would love to, with buts in the way. May we instead learn to say I love this or that but I love God most and more, instead of the other way around. Living in God’s love is worth more than any “but” can offer. May we not miss out on a love that is rich and freeing.
